Why You Need To Use Behavior Tracking Sheets as a Classroom Management Strategy

Are you looking to help students take ownership of their actions? Do you want students to reflect on how they can improve their behavior? Isn’t that what all teachers dream of in a classroom management system? Using behavior tracking sheets will help with both of these things.

The Problem With Points Systems

I used to give Class Dojo points like they were going out of style. Although I did see some positive results in terms of positive behavior, I struggled in helping students: reflect on their behavior & choices (positive or negative) and take ownership of their actions.

One of the problems with only using a points system like Class Dojo is that it is very black and white. Either students get a point or they don’t. It doesn’t foster that deep thinking about behavior that we want in our students.

I Want My Students To Reflect About Their Choices

I wanted my students to learn to reflect on their choices and set goals to improve. As we know, great behavior usually correlates with more learning.

When my students had a bad day, I wanted them to approach it with how they could improve the next day. I wanted them to reflect on their behavior and choices with a growth mindset.

The problem was… how could I do this? No matter how many pep talks I gave, I wasn’t getting the outcome I wanted.

I decided to try using behavior tracking sheets as a classroom management strategy. I started with an ugly template that I made in Microsoft Word that had a traffic light at the top (lol), and off we went.

I’m so happy I gave it a whirl!

I now use much cuter behavior tracking sheets with a reflection portion for students to fill out at the end of the month. I have a bundle of themed tracking sheets for each month in my shop.
